Welcome to the Bristol Hills Fly Company page. It is our
goal at BHFC to offer our clients a rewarding and enjoyable outing.
Our guides will do their best to teach you some of the tricks to
becoming successful on our local waters, while retaining just the
right amount of information to keep you coming back each year.
We are blessed with year round Fly fishing opportunities in the
Finger Lakes region. We will fish most of the tributaries to Lake
Ontario including the Salmon River, Oak Orchard, Genesee River, as
well as some smaller waters like the Oatka creek, Wiscoy and the
Cohocton. Fish species and time of the year will dictate our game
plan as where to fish .

Late winter and early spring offers us the chance to get into some excellent Steelhead
fishing. As always we need the cooperation of Mother Nature to keep
the streams at fishable levels. The preferred method to take these
brilliant fish is on light tackle fly gear. We will show you, our
client, how to properly play these fish on light tackle and how truly
rewarding it is to land these magnificent fish. As the
month of April rolls around our other local streams open up and offer
us some great Brown Trout and Rainbow fishing. Traditional spring
techniques with egg patterns and small nymphs make for some enjoyable
days on the water.

As the summer season approaches so does the dry fly season. This
, however is not the only way to fish. We will utilize traditional
nymphing techniques, and maybe even work some streamers. Our spring
and freestone creeks offer us a great summer fishery. As evening
approaches and with a little luck we can catch the spinner falls
and watch the streams come alive. Nothing is better than the sounds
of a flowing stream and rising Brown trout gulping down those flies.
For those of you who prefer to catch warm water fish we can target
both large and small mouth bass as well as pan fish. This is a great
way to introduce a child to the wonders of fishing on either, Fly
or traditional spinning gear.
As fall approaches and the weather begins to cool, the tributaries
in the Finger Lakes area of New York come alive with spawning salmon.
For those of you who have never experienced the thrill of hooking
into one of our King salmon on a fly rod, you owe it to your self
to try it once (we know you will be back again after this experience). As
the salmon begin to spawn the brown trout colored so brightly in
their fall colors show up to feast on any loose eggs that are floating
down the river. Excitement for all as we target these magnificent
fish, sure to take you into your backing while testing your fishing
ability as they leap into the air trying to throw the hook. A mixed
bag of Kings in the 20 pound range and browns from 10 + pounds is
not uncommon during the peak of the run. Most of the water we will
fish during the fall is easily waded, however we do strongly advise
the use of studded wading boots . My personal favorite is the Simms Guide boot with the Aqua Stealth spiked bottoms . These boots give me great support and all day comfort. A great choice for a reel is the ORVIS Battenkill Mid Arbor IV. This reel is my personal favorite as it holds an ample amount of backing and provides a extremely smooth and strong drag system. The ORVIS TLS 7wt 10' rod is a great rod for the hard fighting Kings and Browns that we will encounter.

Please feel free to contact us for any questions that you may have
about the type of gear to bring along for your trip. We would rather
you ask, then arrive unprepared and not be able to get the full
enjoyment out of your trip. Roll casting can cover most of the streams.
If you don’t feel that your skills are up to the task rest
assured that our professional guides would instruct you so that by
the end of your trip you will have the knowledge and confidence to
succeed on your own.
As the sunlight fades into darkness we will relive the tales of the ones that got away and share
the memories of the ones that did not. It is our goal at Bristol
Hills Fly Company to provide you with a memorable trip and to make
some new life long fishing friends. We at BHFC hope that we are able
to provide you with the resources to make you a better Fly fisher.
If you feel that your skills are not what you had wished for, please
check into one of our casting clinics. These “schools” are
designed to help improve your ability as well as teach new comers
the art of Fly- casting.
We also conduct on- stream schools to work with you to help your
overcome any challenges that you may have while on stream.

Important follow up for the Oak Orchard
Orleans County signs agreement for Oak Orchard River Access
The Orleans County Legislature has signed a three year lease agreement with a local landowner to provide year-round public fishing access on the Oak Orchard River at an annual cost of $7,500. The agreement provides over 4,000 linear feet of river access on a portion of the east river bank for fall, winter and spring world-class fly fishing for trout and salmon. The free public fishing area includes the renowned "Sycamore Hole", a mid-stream island and part of the peninsula north of the power dam. "We felt that opening this part of the river again to the public was important to enhance the economic impact on our restaurants, lodging businesses, and tackle shops," said George Bower, County Legislature chairman, who with Legislator Ken Rush, negotiated the agreement. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation estimates that anglers produce $9 million in annual expenditures while fishing Orleans County.
Rules have been adopted and will be posted along with a map of the site, officially named, 'Oak Orchard River Access
Area.' Anglers are encouraged above all to respect the rights of area property owners and to observe posted signs while enjoying this world-class fishery. There is ample public and private parking available. The new land should be accessed via the North and South NYSDEC access points. As with any stream fishing, care should be taken on trails and in swift moving water.
